Test Report

Toshiba SD-V392 DVD/VCR Combo

Toshiba SD-V392 VCR/DVD Player Can't record in LP !!!, September 8, 2004 Reviewer: Rustic Yokel - Pros:
- I was also scared off Sony and Panasonic after reading many bad reviews, and had locally heard good things about Toshiba.
-The unit is reasonably easy to hook up to tv and satellite dish.
-The sound on the TV improved after unit installed.
-Everything works so far, recording, dvd player, etc. Haven't tried special effects on DVD yet.
-The TV image while viewing a VHS tape or a DVD is good.

Cons:
-The VCR only records in SP and SLP, there is NO LP (4 hours on a tape) SETTING! This is the setting most people use, and the most efficient, so why are all the manufacturers dropping it??? The new Panasonic units also do not record in LP, they also
only use SP and SLP.
-Most of the internal components are plastic now, my old 1995 Panasonic weighs at least five times as much as the new Toshiba, as on the older unit most of the internal parts are metal.
The salesman said that on the newer VCR's they have at least a 30% return rate in the first three months, due to broken plastic components.

Exactly as advertised, July 13, 2004 Reviewer: An electronics fan I was scared off of Sony and Panasonic by some of the reviews, especially stories of the DVD door problems and the poor service. The specs for this combo DVD/VCR seemed to include everything I wanted. I almost passed on this one too because the dimensions as shown were too big for my cabinet. But I checked the Toshiba web site and found that the dimensions as shown on the Amazon page were incorrect. I notified Amazon and they have corrected the dimensions. I bought it and so far am quite happy with it. The remote has far more buttons than I have ever seen, but the manual is quite thorough. The set up is simple and the DVD door opens and closes quite smoothly. Everything I tried so far works.

Huge piece of junk., December 15, 2004 Reviewer: Linda R (Strongsville, OH United States) - I bought this on Amazon 6 months ago and wish I didn't. I didn't listen to the bad reviews. Now this DVD player is freezing up on the picture anywhere from every few seconds to every couple minutes. Sometimes you have to FF or stop it to get it to play again. Plus if you set the timer on the vcr then it automatically goes to the DVD screen and you can't watch any t.v. This is really bad for people who use timers a lot which I do because I have them set for every week so the timer is constantly on. Plus the unit is kind of loud which other reviewers wrote about. Now the DVD player is unwatchable because who wants the picture constantly freezing up (this was for both DVD rental movies, dvd's I own, and dvd recordings of home videos.

Hard to please husband, December 14, 2004
Reviewer: Yardham, J. "Jude" (Missouri) - See all my reviews
We are very happy with this purchase. Bought it for our bedroom. Now my husband wants one for both the guest room and the playroom. We have an Onkyo system in living room and and after that purchase he said that was only brand we'd ever buy...but price was right and our son swears by Toshiba. Easy hook up and very good picture quality.

Consider another brand, December 12, 2004
Reviewer: Letmebeme (Northern California) -
I wish I could get my money back! After the third use of the DVD, the rented dvd got stuck in the unit. I had to return the unit to the manufacturer (I had to insist that they pay for shipping), and was promised a new unit. During the one month I waited for a replacement, calls to customer service were fruitless. Timer recording on the vcr and ejecting a tape is a two-step process; too complicated compared to my other three VCRs. Buttons on the remote are too small and the lettering is even smaller! Will never buy another Toshiba product based on poor customer service performance!
