I purchased this about 3 weeks ago after doing a great deal of reseach on portable DVD players. So far, so good. The picture is great and the sound (a problem with a lot of portables) works well without earphones (surround sound) and great with earphones (I use the same Apple sound reduction ear phones that I use with my IPOD). I primarily use it while on a plane and have been very pleased with the ease of operation. They say the battery lasts 2-1/2 hours at low monitor light but I have not used it that long (it takes about 2 1/2 hours to recharge). It's so new (mine was manufactured in June 2005) that Philips is not selling extra batteries yet, which would be required for long trips. Also, I did get an extended warranty from Circuit City because the Philips warranty is only 90 days. My cable/internet went out the other day, so we just watched a movie on the DVD - another good reason to have one!
Kinda Chincy ... / Report September 26, 2005
Hi ... just got the DVD player today and here's my 2 cents:
1) It plays the movies OK ... pretty much what you'd expect from a small LCD screen. It's not as good as high end laptop screens.
2) The sound is tinny and as you would expect from tiny little speakers.
3) The part that bums me out about this player is the build quality. There's nothing solid about this thing. I'm comparing it too a laptop and not another portable DVD player and I'm saying the hinge connecting the screen isn't very robust, the DVD lid (covers the DVD bay) as a flimsy piece of plastic, and the Battery pack is secured by the tiniest little plastic hangers that I don't think will make it through a cross atlantic flight with 2 kids !!
I bought this in Europe as a codefree player (CHF700 = $550) and don't see this thing being worth that kind of money - maybe for the $350 US price I would be kinder!
Maybe at some point the music industry would stop jacking around the tourists and business travellers of the wold with their stupid region codes and give us players at normal prices!!
(sorry for the rant ... hope it helps)
