Good DVD Burner - GREAT Customer Support / Report November 16, 2005
I got this drive about 10 months ago to burn slide show DVD's from my photos and AVI movies from my digital camera. Worked fine for this purpose. However, when I tried to play back the DVD's on my computer, they would not play. They would play fine on a stand alone DVD player, just not on the Sony drive. I e-mailed Sony, and they responded promptly with a list of things to check on my computer. I went through their list and followed their suggestions regarding checking computer settings, etc. This didn't fix the problem, so I called the TOLL FREE number they provided in their e-mail. It took 3 calls to get the problem fixed, but each time I got a knowledgeable technician (who actually spoke good English). Each time they gave me something else to try, and after the third time, they came up with the solution to my problem. Turns out the Roxio software that came with my computer's original CD drive had interfered with the Sony DVD drive. So I got the Roxio files cleaned up from my system and now the Sony drive works fine.
I just wanted to let everyone know about the good experience I had with Sony technical support. This is a good product.
This drive is defective don't buy!!! / Report November 10, 2005
This is a defective drive. I was able to burn a couple of disks and then it stopped working. I have checked discussion boards and there are hundreds of entries on this drive with the same problem. It will not read any disks and is now useless. I had a lot of faith in Sony products until now. I think since they are out sourcing to China the qualllity of there products have dropped significantly. I just wanted to warn you all before you bought this bad product and that you should check for yourselves. This deserves a less than a 1 star rating!!!
A Winner / Report September 20, 2005
I am the sort of guy who downloads a lot of gb's a day, burns a lot of dvds into Divx format and constantly use up media. I have a 120 GB of data on my computer's hard drive but I'm constantly short of disc space. I need to burn 4.7GB DVD R+ to save data.
The Sony DRU710A does everything it promises to do. I can burn cds at 40X and they burn perfectly. At first I thought I might have a problem with the buffer owing to the small size. There has not been one cd that this drive has skipped or spoilt. My data burning has gone up from 5-8 a month to around 60 discs (including dvds and cds) a month. My friends now consider me one of the most genuine media sharing people. I love this drive because it's reliable and fast.
I can't say much about the software provided with this drive but I do know that Nero 6 Ultra Edition and the Sony DRU 710 A go just perfectly.yes, this is my first dvd writer but it's also the best. For those of you wondering what PC I use, I own a AMD ATHLON 2600+ with 512MB of RAM.
I have installed the black drive bay because it goes along with my black cabinet. A lot of people raise an eyebrow in appreciation when they see the speed at which it works.
I burn an 8X Dvd with 4.7 GB of data in just around 10mins30 seconds. I have been using this drive since November'04 mind you. It cost me $120 then but it's worth every buck I paid.
my verdict - A+
I burn tons of data discs so I know what I'm talking about. This drive is as reliable as it gets. Why buy an HP drive and worry about compatibility issues? Save yourself the sweat.
PS - I don't use media by brands like Sony, etc. I use the cheapest media available because this drive just burns them all without any form of hesitation.
Very reliable / Report September 6, 2005
I've had this burner for about 6 months, and I've burned a ton of DVDs with it. I've burned both data DVDs and video DVDs. I always use DVD+R media, but I've used all sorts of brands and speeds from 4X to 16X. I've found this to be a fast and reliable burner that produces video DVDs that can be read on everything I've tried from computers to various consumer DVD players. I almost always use Nero 6.6 to burn, by the way.
This is in marked contrast to two other burners I've owned, which proved to be dicey.
There is a newer DRU-800A model that I may get next.
